Immersive VR Therapy | Alexandria University Partnership

Year: 2019 | Category: Healthcare XR • Therapeutic VR • Interactive Virtual Environments
Partnership: Alexandria University – Medical Consultants

Project Overview:
Virception is a VR-based therapeutic concept developed to support children with motor-perception challenges, including autism-related needs. Through a collaboration between medical experts, designers, and engineers, Metas created a child-friendly interactive virtual environment that transforms traditional rehabilitation into a playful, engaging, and measurable experience. The platform provides controlled therapy sessions where movement and sensory stimulation are guided and tracked, allowing clinicians to monitor progress efficiently.

Project Goals:
  • Stimulate and guide movement in children through safe, interactive VR environments.
  • Support children who struggle with traditional clinic-based instructions.
  • Improve therapy efficiency using structured visual, audio, and interactive stimuli.
  • Create a child-centered experience that motivates engagement and cooperation.
Challenges Addressed:

Traditional rehabilitation can be slow, stressful, and disengaging for children. Clinical sessions may lead to fatigue or resistance, particularly for children with autism or perception-related motor difficulties. Virception addresses these challenges by offering:

  • A controlled, child-friendly VR world
  • Engaging stimuli to encourage physical interaction
  • A flexible, measurable framework for clinicians
The Virception Approach:
  1. Child-Friendly Virtual Environments: Interactive, safe, and visually appealing spaces designed to reduce anxiety and promote engagement.
  2. Therapy Guided by Programmed Stimuli: Pre-designed visual and auditory prompts encourage movement responses, bridging perception and action.
  3. Collaborative Medical + Design + Engineering Loop: Therapy is informed by clinical diagnosis, environment design, and software integration to translate medical objectives into interactive VR experiences.
Key Benefits:
  • Portable and flexible setup suitable for different clinical spaces
  • Easy operation for medical staff without specialized technical knowledge
  • Personalized therapy experiences adjustable for each child
  • Progress tracking and interaction logging for measurable outcomes
  • Controlled environments that feel natural and motivating for children
What Metas Built:
  • Therapeutic VR experience concept and interaction model
  • Child-friendly interactive virtual environments tailored for clinical therapy
  • Doctor-led control framework with patient progress monitoring for measurable outcomes
Where This Can Be Deployed:
  • Pediatric clinics and medical centers
  • Hospitals and rehabilitation facilities
  • Adaptable or open spaces requiring portable setups

Summary:
Virception demonstrates Metas’ ability to design immersive healthcare XR solutions that combine human-centered design, clinical insight, and interactive technology. The project transforms rehabilitation into a motivating, measurable, and safe experience, supporting medical goals while enhancing patient engagement.
